ANNIVERSARY OF WILLIE McTELL'S DEATH TODAY

On this day in 1959 - a Wednesday - at 4.25 in the morning, Willie McTell died in Ward 2 of the Ingram Building in Milledgeville State Hospital, in the village of Hardwick, just outside Milledgeville GA. He was 56 years old.

(The several previously-unpublished details here are all to be found in Hand Me My Travelin' Shoes, and are a small part of the new research the book incorporates. The photograph, which shows the Ingram Building in more recent times, is not included in the UK hardback of the book. I am hopeful that a future US edition will do better on photographs.)

Hi Michael,

Sorry to get in touch with you this way but couldn't see anywhere to send a private message.

I've really enjoyed your book. Having been a McTell fan for years it was amazing to have something to paint the picture around him.

I'm dropping a line because I'm wanting to put on a fun and quite small one-off night in London with a bunch of very different bands doing a couple of Blind Willie covers each.

I wondered if you'd be interested in getting involved at all?

If so then you can reach me at alastairharper (at) gmail (dot) com
